Why Do We Even Celebrate 4/20?
Before it became a global celebration of cannabis culture, “420” started with a group of high school friends in California back in the 1970s. Known as the “Waldos,” these sly teens used to meet up at 4:20 PM after school to search for a rumored hidden cannabis crop. While they never found the plants, the time, 4:20, stuck as a code word for lighting up.
As the story spread, the number took on a life of its own, eventually evolving into April 20th (4/20) as the unofficial holiday for cannabis lovers everywhere. Over the years, 4/20 has grown from a secret code to a full-blown celebration of community, culture, and cannabis freedom.
Today, it’s a day to honor how far the industry has come and a reminder to keep pushing for access, equity, and education in the cannabis space. We’re proud to carry that spirit forward at our Four20 Block Party.
