Best Buds Founders’ Journey: From Athletes to Cannabis Advocates and Entrepreneurs

Meet Laura Trujillo and Amanda Terpstra, the dynamic duo behind BestBüds, a cannabis dispensary born from a lifelong journey of passion, teamwork, and perseverance. Their story is one of two athletes whose paths crossed on the soccer field and who discovered the transformative power of cannabis together. Laura and Amanda have channeled their experiences as teammates into creating a business that emphasizes the potential mental and physical comforts that the plant can offer.

In this blog, we’ll dive into their remarkable story and see how they went from scoring goals on the field to achieving their dreams in the cannabis industry.

Kickin’ It Back: Early Life & Soccer Background

Laura Trujillo

Laura’s soccer journey started in her childhood where she played on all-boys teams alongside her brother. It wasn’t until high school that she found herself playing with other girls, marking a significant transition in her athletic career. As a offensive player, Laura developed a strong sense of teamwork and resilience. While she initially used cannabis recreationally in her early years, it became a crucial part of her life when she was diagnosed with PTSD. This diagnosis led her to explore the medicinal benefits of cannabis, which provided her with much-needed relief and balance.

Amanda Terpstra

Amanda’s background is a bit different, rooted in dance and skiing before soccer entered her life. Growing up in a skiing family, Amanda embraced the thrill of the slopes, but it was in high school that she discovered her love for soccer. As a defensive player, Amanda brought her agility and strategic thinking to the field. Unfortunately, she faced significant challenges with injuries, tearing both of her ACLs in separate instances. During her recovery, Amanda found that cannabis was one of the few things that genuinely alleviated her pain and aided her healing process.

Teaming Up At Fairleigh Dickinson University

When Laura and Amanda met at Fairleigh Dickinson University, their connection was almost instant. Both passionate about soccer, they quickly became inseparable on and off the field. Playing together allowed them to form a strong bond built on trust, shared experiences, and a deep understanding of teamwork.

Their time as teammates was more than just about the game; it was about supporting each other through every challenge and celebrating every victory. This friendship, forged through countless practices, games, and moments of camaraderie, laid the foundation for their future as business partners.

From Best Buds to “BestBüds”

Transitioning from college athletes to business partners was a natural step for Laura and Amanda. Their bond, strengthened through years of playing soccer together, evolved into a shared vision beyond the field. The two have always balanced each other out: Amanda, the swift and light defensive player, and Laura, the aggressive, down-and-dirty offensive player. Amanda, the business-oriented logical thinker, and Laura, the creative free spirit. Together, the two of them could tackle anything.

Inspired by their personal experiences with cannabis and its benefits, they decided to open BestBüds, a dispensary that would reflect their values of teamwork, resilience, and community support. Combining their passion for cannabis with their commitment to helping others, Laura and Amanda set out to create a welcoming space where everyone could explore the mental and physical reliefs that cannabis offers.

Amanda believes that education is key when it comes to understanding and utilizing cannabis effectively. She encourages athletes and everyone else to really listen to their bodies and understand their own wellness needs. Laura echoes this sentiment, emphasizing the importance of educating people about the holistic benefits of cannabis. She focuses on the role of terpenes and the endocannabinoid system, helping others realize that cannabis is more than just a recreational substance – it’s a vital part of a balanced wellness routine.
